We bought three of these in the end, which sounds excessive until you meet my family. Each set of grandparents has one and now Sunday calls involve somebody holding up a phone while the other end sings. My mother in law has opinions about the volume knob and she is not shy about them.

Both kids left for college in August and the house went from loud to nothing overnight. I bought this mostly to fill the space. Turns out my husband and I have completely different taste in music and now we take turns being wrong about it. It has been a better fall than I expected.

I sell at the Saturday market and the booth next to mine plays a radio that gets one station. I brought this instead and put out a sign that said request a song. People stopped, and then they bought something. My booth neighbor has asked to borrow it twice, which I take as a professional compliment.

We run a Friday teen night and getting kids off their phones is the whole job. The room with this machine is always the fullest one now. It is also the only activity where the older kids and the younger ones end up in the same space instead of splitting by age, which never happens otherwise.

We had forty guests in a backyard and did not want to hire a band we could not afford. This ran the whole evening, played our playlist over Bluetooth through dinner, and then handled speeches and a few songs afterward. Two mics meant the toasts were actually audible, which had been my main worry. Several guests assumed we had rented a sound system and were surprised when we said otherwise. It did a job I would otherwise have paid someone to do.

My grandmother's recipe takes most of an afternoon and the kitchen gets hot and boring. Now the music runs the whole time and my daughter comes in to sing instead of coming in to complain about the smell. She has learned all the words to songs from 1962, which was not on my list of parenting goals.

Our tasting room seats thirty and most Saturdays there is a two hour lull between the lunch crowd and the evening crowd. We put this in the corner and now people linger through the lull with a glass instead of leaving. Wine sales on those afternoons are up and I did not have to hire anyone.

Our street does a potluck on the first Friday and it usually ends by eight when the older neighbors leave. This month it went to ten. The people who never stay past dessert were still there, and one of them sang a song in Italian that nobody understood and everybody clapped for.

My brother got back from a deployment in September and the family thing at the airport was too loud and too public for him. We did a small dinner at our place instead. He sang one song, badly, and then he sat down and finally looked relaxed for the first time all week.

My garage gym is a rack, a bench and a speaker, and the speaker is the newest thing in there. I put on a song and lift through it, twelve minutes of work per song, which is a better timer than the one on my phone. My friends think it is funny until they try it.
